The first artist we looked at in selfies is Vivian Maier we watched a documentary on her and looked closely at a few of her photos. She was a American street photographer and she worked as a nanny. Everyone in the documentary that new Vivian personally said that she was very secretive and no one really new how creative she was and how much she liked taking photos. Vivian was only discovered after she died by John Maloof who found a box of her negatives at a auction opposite his house. After he found one box of her negatives he was really intrested in her work and found the rest of the boxes and brought them off people. Vivian had thousands and thousands of undeveloped negatives that john printed and tried to get into multiple galleries. Vivian has become quite famous online since her work has been found and her style has people very interested in her photos. |
Vivian Maiers work
This is a exhibition we made using Vivian Maiers photos and we wrote some information about her at the bottom, after we arranged the exhibition we presented it to the class. We organised the photos into different groups and put coloured ones around the black and white photos. We decided to call our presentation "Fame after death" because Vivian Maier only became famous after she died.
www- I think our exhibition looks a bit different because not all the photos on it are a normal angle.
ebi- I think are exhibition could look better if we added more colour in the writing as most of the photos we used are black and white.

The selfie on the left is one of the first selfies ever taken and the selfie on the right is a selfie taken fairly recently. In the selfie on the left you can see his face is very visible with nothing cover it ,however in the selfie on the right you can see that her hair is covering most of her face and she is resting her head on her hand which is probably not the position she was in before taking the selfie. Also she has a lot makeup on and she is pouting her lips however in the selfie on the right he is in a natural position which he was probably in before taking the selfie. Ever since photography was first invented people have been taking selfies but it is only recently that it has become a big thing, the thing making selfies big is probably the social media platforms becoming bigger and bigger and people feeling the need to post endless pictures of themselves on them and the competition they feel to have 'the best selfies and the most followers. '
Selfies on social media
These are a few examples of selfies from social media platforms like snapchat, Instagram, tumblr etc. In most of the selfies people are hiding the majority of there face with there hand or there hair or they have a filter on there face making it airbrushed. The person who took the selfie would have probably spent ages taking multiple different selfies and editing them. Just because of the competition and pressure social media has put on the person to look a certain way and pose a certain way.People think they will gain more of a following if they cover there face and put on lots of makeup because they don't think people will follow them for just being them ad looking how they would look on a average day.

My selfies
This is a photo shoot we did in our photography lesson, we went out with different supplies like blue plastic bags and elastic bands and we tried to take interesting selfies that are different to the average selfie you see on social media.
Self portraits before cameras
Even before cameras were made people were still creating forms of selfies one of them being self portraits. People would pay quite a lot of money to get a picture painted of them by a professional artist. These people also paid the artist more money to change their appearance for example if they didn't like there nose they would pay for the artist to make it smaller. This is similar to photoshop now.
One of the earliest forms of a self portrait is cave paintings people used to put their hands on the wall of a cave and then put dirt in their mouth and spit it at there hands so they would be left with a similar thing to a negative on the cave wall.
Photography selfie assessment
Each of the photographs has a main subject but not all of them can be identified as they are covered by something or they are just a shadow. All of the images can also be classed as a self portrait even if they aren't the same as the average selfies that are posted a lot on social media platforms. Even though all the photographs come under the genre of selfies they are still all very different images, They are all taken in different places and all have different backgrounds and they use different techniques to cover the main subject. All of the pictures also contain shadows adding a bit more mystery to them as you know someone is there but they are covered so you can't see who they are or what they look like. Also the images also have the main subject centred so you are drawn to them before you look at whats happening in the background.
Another thing all the photographers have done is use frames within their images, some being actual frames foe example in Woodman's picture. Some being cut out of card like in Josephson's photo and some looking like they have a lot been photoshoped on like in Friedlande's photo. As well as all containing frames the frames are one of the main things in the photos. The frames are almost as important as the main subject in some of the photos and without the frames you probably wouldn't be as drawn to the people within the photograph. As well as having sort of main frame with in the image all of the photos Friedlander and Woodman in particular contain other frames as well. Woodmans photo has even got a boarder around it even through Woodman new it would be on paper so it would have a boarder anyway and in Friedlander's photo there are things like doors and the floor which all connect making it look like another frame, Also in Josephson's photo there is a shadow of the main frame on the car.
I think all the photographs have been creative with what is in their pictures and I think they have all thought about how the final picture would look quite a lot. I also think all the pictures are very mysterious and make you think a lot about who is in the picture and why they decided to take the photo when you can't see who is in it. Many people probably wouldn't see the point in taking a selfie when you can't really see yourself ad wouldn't post it on any social media platform. I think it makes people look at the photo in more depth when you can't see the person in it and I think it makes the audience more interested. I think if more photos like Josephson's, Woodman's and Friedlander were posted on social media people wouldn't just scroll past them, I think they would look at them for quite a while and try and work out whats going on in the image and what the photographer was thinking. Another thing I find mysterious is that Woodman's photo looks like a mirror at first but you can't see the camera and when I looked at it in more detail you could tell it was a door frame instead.
The photo I enjoy looking at the most is probably between Friedlander and Woodman. I enjoy looking at Friedlander's photo because I'm really interested in finding out whether the white frame with a shadow in it was edited on or if it just looks like it was edited on. At first it looks edited but it could have been a light on in the shop window and if I could ask Friedlander one question about the photo thats what I would ask him. I also find Woodman's photo really interesting and I really like it because you can't see anyone fully in it and the door frame in it really looks like a mirror so at first I was wondering why you couldn't see the camera in the photo and I think quite a lot of people would think the same thing and get quite confused by the photo. Also you can't see that much in the background only walls. So the photo could have been taken anywhere in the world which is quite interesting. overall I think I like Woodman's picture most because it is very mysterious and all of them are interesting but I think it is the most interesting.

selfie photographer research
The photographer I decided to research is Ilse Bing. Ilse Bing was born in Germany in 1899 and died in 1998 in manhattan new york, She moved to paris in-between and lived there for 10 years until the second world started, Her and her husband were both jews and were put in separated camps in the south of France they reunited after six weeks and then left for new york in 1941. shortly after the 1950s Bing gave up photography and started experimenting with paintings and poetry occasionally using a bit of photography in her work.
Bing had a lot of her work in magazines and she had lots of exhibitions in paris her work was put in magazines like le monde and vogue as she liked photographing fashion. She used natural lighting and unconventional cropping within her work.
I really like Bings work as there is always a main subject in her work and some of her work really shows the separation between the status of people and all of her photography is in black and white as there weren't coloured cameras when she did photography ,I really like how all her photographs are black and white because it adds a bit of mystery to her work and it makes the audience more interested. Some of her self portraits also have other people in the background or a interesting background they all look like they could have been taken in different places and all the subjects look like they have a very different life to the other subjects in her photos.

final outcomes
These are some of the final outcome choices I had, I chose to combine some of my favourite selfies instead of just having one of them by themselves because it would make it a bit more interesting. i used a mirror and printed out a few selfies from my phone and stuck the photos on with tape so they would be easily removed.
This was my favourite photo out of all my final outcome choices because you can't really tell that it was taken in a mirror so i think it would confuse people the most out of all my final outcome choices and i think people would have to look at it harder to realise how the photo was taken. I like all my final outcome choice because they aren't just like a regular selfie and they are all a bit different.
